Performance review: Here’s what to do

It is the end of the financial year. The announcement of the performance review has just been out, and has been causing you sleepless nights. Worry not, for there are various ways to tackle these sessions. The key is to consider these reviews as ones that could reverse your fortunes at the firm, rather than get intimidated by them. So here are a few ways by which you can overcome these performance review blues.

The first and foremost way is to keep cool. Never ever get bogged down by the significance of the event. It is after all just a simple session that revolves around what you have been doing all year. There is nothing to fear, as long as you know you have put in your best efforts.

As a report in blog.livecareer.com says, “Negative feedback isn’t the end of the world, or your job, and it shouldn’t make you feel like a scolded child”.

At the same time, do not get an inflated ego, if the session is a rosy one. Appreciations coming your way should only pave the path for a better year ahead, and not make you complacent.

Next, do your homework in advance. The review date will certainly be announced beforehand, so take your time and be prepared. Focus your points on what you have done, and how you have brought profits to the company’s number table.

If criticism comes your way, take it in the way a responsible employee would. Do not overreact and create an unpleasant situation for both you and your employer.

As the report aptly puts it, “You may even be criticized unfairly, or you may be asked to apologize for failures that weren’t your fault. In all of these cases, respond the same way. Listen carefully, pause before you answer, take notes, and reflect before you react”.

These little things can go a long way in making the review session a profitable one for you, apart from strengthening your bond with the organization.
