How to ask for a raise in salary

A recent survey suggests that those who earn lower salaries are less likely to ask for raise than those who earn more.

The study, according to livecareer.com, suggests that just under half of the US population haave asked for a raise, and most of the workers were already earning $60,000 while the type that never asked was earning less than $59,000.

Only people who ask raise, will get it and the more one earns, the more likely they can request for a raise.

However before asking for a hike, blog.livecareer.com lists out a few considerations.

Working in a small industry, one cannot expect more salary and if you are left with no option to move then you are entitled to what you get. But there is always the option of asking, and remember even a small hike can make a huge difference in the financial status.

Always speak with confidence when asking for hike and be prepared for any answer given by the employer. If it is yes, well and good, but if it is a no, be ready with your next plan of action.

Before asking for a hike, compare your pay scale with others in the same region, position and experience.

Always try to associate your raise request based on your talent. 'You may calculate your ideal salary by factoring in your unique talents, impressive work ethic, then explain how your long commute adds stress and therefore threatens these attributes. If you were to obtain a salary increase, the stress of commute expenses would be eliminated,' the article points out.

Never put the focus always on you, think what the company would gain by giving you hike, use proper tone and appropriate time to ask the raise.

When the employer says No, don't agree with it immediately, ask why you were denied. Ask what are the chances of hike in the near future. If you are satisfied continue or start looking for a new job.
