Be a motivator, not a creator

We have discussed umpteen times as to what makes a good leader. However, there is another aspect that needs to be dissected, and deserves to be debated. This, one can say, is the most primary quality of a person who takes on the leadership mantle. What is it?

This necessary trait is the leader's ability to identify the potential of his or her subordinates. It does not stop with identifying, as the leader should also go on to tap the potential and allow it to flourish on a given platform.

This is precisely what a report in www.inc.com points out. It says, “Few leadership mindsets are more important than a leader's mindset of seeing yourself as a creator of creators. It starts with a firm belief in the amazing creation capability of your people, rather than a belief that you are the creator and your people are the implementers”.

It strongly believes that employees can be far more productive when they are allowed to work at their discretion, than in a workplace where they are spoon-fed about their duties and responsibilities. Accountability has always proven to be beneficial and rewarding in the long run, for the employees are now directly responsible for their actions, and will hence ensure they deliver the best.

These assumptions in the report have been arrived at, after a survey of the workers in an organisation, who were asked on their suggestions to improve the numbers.

The leader of the said company, who is later said to have been 'dumbfounded' at the results, stated, “For the last ten years we have spent most of our time trying to tell them how to do their jobs hoping it would improve our business, but we never told them anything about our business. Why do we run the business this way? We are snow blind to their amazing ability to create a better business”.
