A decade later, here is what will matter

We have discussed umpteen number of times, as to what skills and technical knowledge one should be possessing in this day and age. What if we were to cut to a decade later?

Will the current skills and tools we have at our disposal, still be relevant at that point of time? This thought-provoking question has given rise to doubts in this regard. So now let us analyse some of the possible requisites that would be needed in, say 2025, to be in the scheme of things.

First, do not be in the assumption that the current languages, in computer science and programming, will continue to call the shots after about ten years. This is not to say that these will be rendered useless, it is just that they will be replaced by the newer versions that would be relevant for the technologies and operations needed at that time.

Some of these may include new communication platforms, space exploration, and robotics that target manufacturing and healthcare.

Apart from programming languages, those in the verbal category too will rise to prominence. More than prominence, being a multi-linguist will help one master several issues, and give a huge edge over one's peers.

More so, this being a global world will undoubtedly demand a professional to be well-versed with more than just the basic languages. And for those of you for whom English itself is a struggle, as popular blog livecareer says, “start looking into language learning apps and programs. Even if you can only master basic communication skills, it’s better than nothing”.

Next, do not place all your bets on the information technology industry. There are several other sectors that are expected to receive a fillip in the coming years, and get established as the leading revenue-earner.

One of which is the healthcare sector. Experts are betting high stakes on this, as all those in their late-50s or early 60s now, will enter into the elderly category in another ten years time.

So a lot will depend on their medical and healthcare infrastructure, which the state needs to provide as a basic need. So a wise way would be to invest in a career in this field, that will take giant strides in the future.

On the other hand, for those who cannot switch to a different career at their prime, can possibly think of options like networking, which might turn out to be profitable.

When has economics ever gotten out of trend? As always, the business of money and policies in a country like ours, will continue to remain a safe bet in the distant future.

As aptly quoted in livecareer, “ The world will always need economics nerds and financial forecasters who can help the rest of us make sense of it all. Whether or not economics is your field, it’s valuable to understand basics of it so that you may solve problems in your job”.

Similarly, another always-in-vogue job would be teaching. As it is popularly said, a society progresses when it has able and sensible teachers. Even after ten or twenty years, there will always be demand for people to guide and educate the current generation.

Life is a cycle, they say. True to it, all those professions that were overlooked and undermined in the last decade, will bounce back to trend in the next.

For instance, jobs like writers, mathematicians, scientists, artists, historians, athletes, farmers, and entertainers will return to high demand in the near future, thus making it a fortune-reversal of sorts.

So never ever disregard a career now, you never know, it might turn out to be the most attractive profession a few years down the line!
